2007 WSOP Digest: June 3rd: $5,000 Mixed Limit Final Table Set
Day Two at the World Series of Poker? saw the first indicator of just how massive the interest is in the poker world's biggest gathering �� the Amazon Room at the Rio was filled to capacity and beyond. Play continued through Day Two of Event #1, the $5,000 Mixed Hold'em, a new format for this year's event. Meanwhile, the first event to attract massive numbers of participants kicked off, that being Event #3, the first of several $1,500 no-limit Hold'em tourneys on the schedule.
Over in the mixed-limit Event #1, play for the 97 Day One survivors suffered a two-and-a-half-hour delay before getting underway, due to the huge crowds. Day One chip leader Greg 'FBT' Mueller stayed dominant through the early going, even as big names such as Johnny Chan and Humberto Brenes hit the rail. The final-table bubble broke in the wee hours, with Mueller in third place behind Fred Berger and Steve Paul-Ambrose, though this first televised table of the 2007 WSOP promises plenty of surprises --- the top six players are tightly packed. Event #3, $1,500 No Limit Hold'em, had the players literally waiting by the hundreds just for the chance to play. The crush was so deep that many hundreds of players were slotted in as alternates, taking the seats of players previously busted from the event, with the adjacent indoor/outdoor 'tent' and even the distant poker room of the Rio itself pressed into service by the demand. The final entry count: 2,998.
This event's first day featured a sea of relative unknowns sprinkled with many of poker's biggest names, but famed or not, most players suffered the same result as play made it all the way into the money spots by the early-morning hours. Among those surviving through to Event #3's Day Two on Sunday are former Main Event winners Greg Raymer and Chris Moneymaker; other big names still in the hunt include Erick Lindgren, Michael Binger, Roland de Wolfe and David 'The Dragon' Pham. De Wolfe and Pham are in easy sight of 2006 USPC champ Alex Jacob, who sits atop the leader board at the end of Day One with 189,400 chips.
