The Fold of the Century? Steinman Lays Down a Set of Kings to McKeehen!

2 min read

Down to five players in the WPT Rolling Thunder Main Event, all guaranteed $69,650, the blinds were 30,000/60,000 with a 10,000 ante.

David Larson was first to act and folded K?6?. Ping Liu folded Q?9? from the button, Andreas Kniep on the button wasn't getting involved with 10?6?.

Ian Steinman in the small blind woke up with K?K? and raised to 160,000. WSOP Main Event champion Joe McKeehen in the big blind called with Q?10?, making for a 370,000 pot going to the flop.

The flop came A?5?7?, and Steinman bet 150,000. McKeehen called.

With now 670,000 in the middle, the J? hit the turn. Steinman checked, which prompted McKeehen to bet 370,000. Steinman called, growing the pot to 1,410,000.

The river came the K?; giving Steinman a set of kings while McKeehen hit Broadway. Steinman led for 800,000 and McKeehen looked back at his cards once before shoving all in for 2,940,000.

Steinman, with 4,975,000 behind at this time having McKeehen covered**, tanked long and hard, muttering "I'm the worst!" several times.

**According to McKeehen, the graphic showing the chip stacks was wrong, and they actually had similar stacks to start the hand

Steinman used a total of six 30-second time-bank cards before eventually folding.

In one of the breaks, Steinman told the WPT In my mind, my thinking was very kind of fishy, but if its somehow correct then its some weird high-level stuff. It still might have been a terrible fold. Most likely it was just a terrible fold with bad logic and maybe I just kind of got caught up in the moment.

Steinman's fold left him with a decent chip stack. He would eventually outlast McKeehen, finishing second for $201,428 in the event to David Larson ($295,128) while McKeehen finished third ($131,081). Read the full final table recap right here.
