Sahamies Leads EPT Barcelona Final Table; Juanda in Contention

Level 28 : 30,000/60,000, 10,000 ante
Ilari Sahamies
Ilari Sahamies

The 2012 PokerStars.com European Poker Tour Barcelona Main Event continued on Friday as the final 24 players of a 1,082 field looked to make the final table. After six levels of play, just eight players remain including chip leader Ilari Sahamies, who bagged up 7,885,000. He is joined by John Juanda, though he will begin the final table seventh in chips.

The day began quickly as Luis Rufas and Alain Roy became the first two eliminations, followed by Season 7 EPT Prague winner Roberto Romanello in 22nd place. Not long after, John Juanda opened a pot over on the feature table only to have Lucille Cailly three-bet. Ole Schemion then got involved from the cutoff, Javier Piazuelo made it 299,000 to go from the button. Juanda quickly got out of the way, Cailly moved all in, Schemion moved all in over the top, and Piazuela folded.

Showdown
Cailly: {Q-Hearts}{Q-Clubs}
Schemion: {A-Clubs}{K-Clubs}

Cailly got her stack of around 1 million in good, but she was in a quintessential race. Cailly was looking to have as much success as she did when she finished as runner-up of the 2012 PokerStars and Monte-Carlo? Casino EPT Grand Final, but the {A-Spades}{9-Hearts}{9-Diamonds} flop had other plans as it gave Schemion the lead by pairing his ace. Cailly remained stoic as the {5-Clubs} was put out on the turn followed by the {9-Clubs} on the river, putting an end to her tournament in 21st place for 29,400.

After Ibon Merino Borbolla (20th), Algirdas Saveikis (19th), Mauro Canavese (18th) and Piazuelo (17th) were eliminated for 29,400 apiece, the remaining 16 players were combined to the final two tables.

Not long after, Fatima Moreira de Melo, the last woman standing and Team PokerStars SportStar, exited in 16th place for 34,650. Elias Gutierrez Hernandez, who earned the same amount for his 15th-place finish, followed her out the door a short time later.

In Level 25, Day 1a chip leader Aku Joentausta raised to 65,000 from under the gun and was called by Ole Schemion in the cut-off and Ilari Sahamies in the small blind. Joentausta continued for 100,000 on the {j-Spades}{k-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds} flop and was called by both players.

Schemion was the only player who called Joentausta's 300,000 bet on the {6-Diamonds} turn, and the river came the {2-Spades}. Joentausta "emptied the clip" by betting all his remaining 1,190,000 chips. Schemion looked like he wanted to call but it took him five minutes to seemingly pluck up the courage to slide the calling chips forward with his {k-Diamonds}{q-Hearts} for top two-pair. It was good too as Joentausta only had {a-Clubs}{4-Diamonds} and was subsequently eliminated in 14th place for 40,400.

After a bit more play and the eliminations of [Removed:273] (13th-40,400), Mikolaj Zawadzki (12th-46,700), Jonathan Karamalikis (11th-46,700), Morten Mortensen (10th-55,100) and Ole Schemion (9th-55,100), the final table was set.

Ole Schemion Eliminated in 9h Place (55,100)

Ole Schemion

And so after approximately three hours of nine-handed play, Season 9 EPT Barcelona Main Event is finally down to the final table. The unfortunate bubble boy of the night was Germany's Ole Schemion who was busted by Ilari Sahamies, the new chip leader coming into the final day of the tournament.

Sahamies raised preflop to 130,000 and Ole Schemion to his immediate left went all-in for around 1,220,000. Action folded back to Sahamies and he made the call.

Showdown

Sahamies: {8-Diamonds} {8-Spades}
Schemion: {A-Diamonds} {K-Diamonds}

Everyone in the tournament room held their breath as the dealer opened {3-Spades} {Q-Spades} {3-Clubs} on the flop giving Sahamies two pair and leaving the German in need of help. The {J-Spades} wasn't it, and neither was {7-Hearts} on the river. Sahamies' eights held and Schemion was eliminated from the tournament in ninth place.

Morten Mortensen Eliminated in 10th Place (55,100)

Morten Mortensen
Morten Mortensen

After John Juanda had opened with a raise, a short-stacked Morten Mortensen moved all in for 235,000. Juanda didn't seem thrilled, but made a hesitant call nonetheless.

Showdown
Juanda: {5-Spades}{4-Clubs}
Mortensen: {K-Spades}{8-Hearts}

Mortensen was ahead, but Juanda got a good sweat with the {Q-Spades}{3-Clubs}{A-Spades} flop as either a deuce, five or four would give him the win. The {10-Diamonds} wasn't what he needed, but the {4-Hearts} river was. Mortensen closed his eyes for a brief moment before exiting the Main Stage in 10th place for 55,100.

Jonathan Karamalikis Eliminated in 11th Place (46,700)

Jonathan Karamalikis - 11th place
Jonathan Karamalikis - 11th place

It was a cruel end for Jonathan Karamalikis. He fell to Ole Schemion after getting his chips with in great shape.

The Australian opened to 80,000 from under the gun and was three-bet to 185,000 from Schemion in the cut-off. Sinel Anton looked like he wanted to get involved but tank-folded to leave the action back on Karamalikis. He put in a four-bet to 265,000 and then snapped off when Schemion shoved.

Schemion: {a-Diamonds}{q-Spades}
Karamalikis: {q-Clubs}{q-Hearts}

The board ran {a-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{k-Diamonds} to hit the three-outer for the German's hand. Karamalikis was very gracious in defeat.

Right off the bat coming back from the break, Mikolaj Zawadzk was all in preflop over at the feature table and at risk against Mikalai Pobal.

Showdown
Zawadzki: {K-Clubs}{10-Hearts}
Pobal: {A-Hearts}{8-Spades}

Zawadzki was behind and looking for some help, but he wouldn't get a lick of it as the board ran out {Q-Spades}{3-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{Q-Clubs}. Zawadzki failed to catch and he was eliminated in 12th place, good for 46,700.

If you're going to out, why not go out in a blaze of glory? Aku Joentausta won't be thinking that right now, he'll be ruing his failed bluff attempt.

Fatima Moreira de Melo Elimated in 16th Place (34,650)

"Queens again!" said Fatima Moreira de Melo after her all in push was called by Anaras Alekberovas.

She was under-the-gun and paused to consider her move before pushing her remaining 601,000 over the line. The action folded around to Alekberovas in the big blind and he snapped.

Alekberovas: {q-Spades}{q-Diamonds}
Moreira De Melo: {a-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}

The board ran {7-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{7-Clubs}. A jack was not enough to save the Team PokerStars SportStar.

Cracked Queens Send Piazuelo to the Rail

Javier Piazuelo
Javier Piazuelo

Over at the feature table, Javier Piazuelo found himself all in preflop holding {Q-Spades}{Q-Hearts} and at risk against the {9-Spades}{8-Spades} of Antonin Duda. The former was primed for a double, but the {7-Hearts}{6-Spades}{K-Spades} flop made things very interesting as it gave Duda an open-ended straight draw and a flush draw.

Much to Piazuelo's dismay, the {3-Spades} turn completed his opponent's flush and left him drawing dead. The {A-Clubs} was put out on the river and then Piazuelo exited in 17th place for 29,400.

The remaining players are now on a 20-minute break as they draw for new seats.

No Save for Saveikis

Algirdas Saveikis
Algirdas Saveikis

Action folded around to Algirdas Saveikis in the cutoff and he moved all in for 382,000. Mauro Canavese was next to act on the button and made a quick call, which inspired both blinds to get out of the way.

Showdown
Saveikis: {Q-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}
Canavese: {10-Spades}{10-Hearts}

The {3-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{10-Diamonds} was disaster for Saveikis as it gave Canvese a set, and the {4-Clubs} turn left him drawing dead. The meaningless {3-Hearts} was run out on the river for good measure, and Saveikis took his leave in 19th place for 29,400.

Junada Cracks Aces to Double Up

John Juanda
John Juanda

John Juanda is one lucky boy, after he found himself in a very cold spot.

Our information is very limited as this hand took place on the TV table. What we do know is that Juanda got his stack in with pocket kings and was called by Ole Schemion holding pocket aces.

Juanda was looking doomed on the {9-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{10-Spades} flop, but the {K-Diamonds} spiked on the turn to give him a set, much to Schemion's disgust. The {J-Clubs} river was of no consequence and Juanda doubled tp 3.5 million.
