Pablo Gordillo Comes Out on Top of an Action-Packed Day 3

Level 19 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Pablo Gordillo
Pablo Gordillo

Day 3 of the Season 10 European Poker Tour Vienna saw the remaining 189 players of a 910-player field return to battle it out for five 90-minute levels. During that time the top 135 players made the money, but eventually the clock expired with just 50 players remaining in contention for the 816,000 first-place prize.

The man best positioned to make a run at the top prize is Pablo Gordillo, who emerged as the chip leader with 2,111,000. Gordillo grabbed the chip lead in Level 18 (3,000/6,000/1,000) when Portuguese pro Michel Dattani tried to run a big bluff. Unfortunately for him, it cost him his tournament life as Gordillo made a good call with pocket sevens.

Others who bagged up healthy stack were Anatoly Filatov (1,500,000), Timo Pfutzenreuter (1,065,000), Simeon Naydenov (1,040,000), and Miltiadis Kyriakides (1,034,000).

Of course not everyone was so lucky on Day 3. Among the 54 players to exit short of the money were Giacomo Fundaro, Luuk Gieles, Ruben Visser, Joep van den Bijgaart, Oliver Price, Dariusz Paszkiewicz, and Ronny Kaiser.

Kaiser fell in Level 16 (2,000/4,000/500) when Frei Dilling from Denmark opened the hijack with a raise to 8,000 and Artem Metalidi from the Ukraine moved all in for 97,500. Kaiser, who was in the small blind, thought for a while before eventually calling all in for 88,000. The big blind folded and so did Dilling.

The EPT Tallinn 2011 Champion was at risk with {A-Clubs}{K-Clubs} against the {10-Hearts}{10-Clubs} of Metalidi. The flop came down {7-Spades}{6-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}, and the tournament director informed the railbirds that Kaiser needed either an ace or king. The {4-Clubs} on the turn left him just six outs, but none of them came when the {3-Clubs} completed the on the river to send the online star to the rail.

From there the in-the-money eliminations came fast and furious. Among those to fall were Sam Trickett (133rd - 8,700), Alexey Makarov (131st - 8,700), Jasper Wetemans (111th - 9,550), Jeff Rossiter (109th - 9,550), and the last EPT champion remaining in the field, Vladimir Geshkennein (81st - 10,650).

Also falling on Day 3 were Team PokerStars Pros Marc-Andre Ladouceur (124th - 8,700), Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier (119th - 9,550), Henrique Pinho (56th - 12,600), and Alexander Kravchenko (55th - 14,600).

Likewise, both Full Tilt Poker Professionals Viktor "Isildur1" Blom and Gus Hansen busted on Day 3. Blom ended up finishing in 77th place, while Hansen did a little better finishing in 71st place, which marked his first EPT cash in nearly a decade!

While many fell, there are still plenty of notables to keep an eye on heading into Day 4 including Wilfried Harig (1,005,000), Artem Metalidi (815,000), Jude Ainsworth (788,000), and the chip leader from Day 1a , Olekssi Khoroshenin. Furthermore, two Team PokerStars Pros are returning for Day 4 in Marcel Luske (512,000) and Johnny Lodden (477,000).

Day 4 action is set to kick off at Noon local time on Thursday. An hour later, the 10,000 High Roller will begin. Of course the PokerNews Live Reporting Team will be bringing you updates from both events, so be sure to check back then. Until then, check out Kristy Arnetts latest adventure where she Segways her way around the city:

Aces Versus Aces

Level 19 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Artem Metalidi
Artem Metalidi

Timo Pfutzenreuter opened under the gun to 17,000 after which action folded to Artem Metalidi on the button. The Ukrainian player made it 45,000 and both blinds quickly released. Action back on Pfutzenreuter who made a four bet to 110,000. Metalidi five bet to 175,000 and called after Pfutzenreuter six bet to 275,000.

{Q-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{6-Clubs} on the flop and Pfutzenreuter bet out 120,000 with 472,000 behind. Metalidi made the call in position.

The {J-Diamonds} on the turn made Pfutzenreuter check and without much hesitation Metalidi declared all in for 415,000. Pfutzenreuter made the call rather quickly and they both tabled their cards.

Timo Pfutzenreuter: {A-Diamonds}{A-Clubs}
Artem Metalidi: {A-Spades}{A-Hearts}

Metalidi couldn't have been happy about that as Pfutzenreuter was free rolling him in an enormous pot. The river was a blank though with the {2-Clubs} and both players got an even part of the pot.

Gus Hansen's Tournament Ends on Day 3

Level 18 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante
Gus Hansen
Gus Hansen

Gus Hansen played an impressive three days of poker but his streak ended on the feature table late on Day 3.

Hansen raised under the gun to 15,000 with 440,000 behind and Fabio Sperling called two seats from his left. Adrian Bussman was seated in the cutoff and he three-bet to 50,000. Both blinds and the button folded after which Hansen and Sperling made the call.

The flop brought out {2-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{6-Hearts} and Hansen lead out for 60,000 and Sperling gave up his hand. Bussman tanked for a bit before he decided to move all in. Hansen tanked for four minutes before the clock was called, and the tournament director gave him a little more time before starting the 60-second countdown.

With about 15 seconds remaining Hansen made the call and he was looking for help.

Bussman: {Q-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}
Hansen: {10-Hearts}{10-Spades}

According to the EPT Live stream Hansen has a 42% chance to win the hand, but the turn, the {8-Spades}, and the {6-Spades} on the river ended the Great Dane's tournament. We will see Hansen again in both Sanremo and Monte Carlo, as he spoke about on the PokerNews Podcast yesterday.

Viktor "Isildur1" Blom's Feature Table Appearance Short But Not So Sweet

Level 18 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante
Viktor Blom
Viktor Blom

Viktor "Isildur1" Blom was recently moved to the feature table, something he's not fond of, but his stay there was short.

Blom shoved his last 98,000 from the button after Robert Haigh had opened for 13,000 from early position. After the blinds got out of the way, Haigh called and Blom discovered the bad news.

Blom: {a-Diamonds}{j-Spades}
Haigh: {a-Hearts}{k-Hearts}

According to the PokerNews Odds Calculator, Haigh was a 73.06% favorite while Blom would survive 22.54% of the time.

The {3-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{10-Spades} flop was no help to the Swede, and his chances dropped to 15.35% while Haigh's jumped to 81.92%. The {K-Clubs} turn paired Haigh, and he became a 90.91% favorite. Blom needed a queen and a queen only on the river to survive something that would come just 9.09% of the time but it wasn't in the cards as the {10-Hearts} blanked.

Harig Busts Geshkenbein in Biggest Pot of the Tournament

Level 17 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Vladimir Geshkenbein
Vladimir Geshkenbein

The biggest pot of the tournament just played out... and we kind of missed it. Fortunately Wilfried Sigmund Harig told us afterwards what exactly had happened.

Geshkenbein had raised preflop with {Q-}{Q-} and he called as Harig made a three bet.

{A-}{Q-}{9-} on the flop and Geshkenbein checked to Harig. The German player made a continuation bet and Geshkenbein called.

The turn was a {3-} and Geshkenbein checked again to his opponent. Harig made a bet and Geshkenbein raised. Harig clicked it back which resulted in a push by Geshkenbein. Harig made the call holding pocket aces.

Set over set and Geshkenbein had just one out left. The river was not the spare queen but a {4-} and Geshkenbein was eliminated from the tournament. Harig in the meantime is the chip leader with more than 1.5 million.

Rossiter Busts in Last Hand Before Break

Level 16 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Jeff Rossiter
Jeff Rossiter

In the last hand before the break, Jeff Rossiter, who has been nursing a short stack for awhile now, all in preflop against Jonathan Roy.

Rossiter: {7-Spades}{7-Hearts}
Roy: {k-Hearts}{k-Spades}

Rossiter was in dire straits, and he needed some major help. The {a-Spades}{8-Hearts}{9-Clubs} flop wasn't too special, but the {6-Diamonds} turn was kind as it gave him an open-ended straight draw. Unfortunately for him, it didn't come in as the {Q-Spades} blanked on the river.

Rossiter made a hasty exit from the tournament floor in 109th place, and Roy stacked his chips before joining PokerNews' Kristy Arnett for an interview.

"I just won three big pots in five minutes," Roy explained about his suddenly massive stack.
