Final Table Action

Action at the final table started quickly, and only a few hands into the day, Jason Bartholomew knocked out Greg Koutelidakis after completing his nut flush draw on the turn against Koutelidakis flopped two pair.

Three shorter stacks were soon gone in quick succession, with Phillip Latimer getting knocked out in eighth, Benjamin Jacobs falling in seventh, and Jesse Jaurigue gone in sixth.

After a short break, Gardner stared down and called down Bartholomew with second-top pair while Bartholomew could only show ace-high in a huge pot that helped propel Gardner to eventual victory. Ken Huynh was next to go when he ran his sevens into the eights of Danny Dagostino, who then fell in third when his cowboys were cracked by Gardners flopped straight.

That set up a heads-up battle between Gardner and Harraka, with the former starting with a chip advantage of almost three times the latter's stack. The first all-in and call came on a nine-eight-seven flop and Gardners jack-nine was in a great position against Harrakas jack-eight. The board ran out blanks and Gardner was officially the champion of the championship event.

Gardner, who is from Eagle Mountain, Utah and describes himself as just a recreational with a wife and three kids, said he was into poker when he was younger but only recently got back into it within the last couple of years. His previous biggest cash before this was for under a thousand dollars.

He added, Thanks to the casino and the tournament directors and the dealers. They were all great. It was a good tournament and a lot of fun.

Congratulations to John Gardner, winner of the Golden Nugget Grand Poker Series Event #22: $600 Championship!

Mark Harraka Eliminated in 2nd Place ($66,570)

Level 30 : 75,000/150,000, 150,000 ante
Mark Harraka
Mark Harraka

Mark Harraka called from the small blind, John Gardner raised from the big blind, and Harraka called.

The flop was {9-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{7-Spades} and after Harraka checked, Gardner jammed to put Harraka to the test. Harraka called for his remaining stack of around 3.5 million and hands were revealed.

Mark Harraka: {j-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}
John Gardner: {j-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}

Both players flopped a pair and a gutshot, but it was Gardner ahead with top pair. The turn was the {k-Clubs}, and the board completed with the {4-Diamonds} to officially put an end to the tournament.

Harraka will have to settle for the second-place prize of $66,570 following a great run, while Gardner has claimed the tournament victory and the top prize of $100,266.

A recap is to follow.

According to spectators, Danny Dagostino was all in on the {j-Hearts}{10-Spades}{8-Spades} flop against John Gardner.

Danny Dagostino: {k-Spades}{k-Diamonds}
John Gardner: {9-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}

Dagostino's cowboys were in rough shape against Gardner's flopped straight. The {4-Clubs} turn left him drawing dead and the meaningless {3-Hearts} completed the board to send Dagostino out in third.

Jason Bartholomew Eliminated in 5th Place ($22,515)

Level 30 : 75,000/150,000, 150,000 ante
Jason Bartholomew
Jason Bartholomew

Jason Bartholomew raised to 325,000 in the hijack, John Gardner called in the small blind, and Mark Harraka defended the big blind.

Before the dealer put out the flop, Gardner checked in the dark, and so did Harraka.

The dealer fanned the {q-Spades}{8-Hearts}{7-Diamonds} flop and Bartholomew bet 600,000. Only Gardner called and the two continued to the turn as Gardner once again checked in the dark.

The turn was the {k-Clubs} and Bartholomew bet 1.1 million. Gardner called.

After another check in the dark by Gardner, the dealer completed the board with the {3-Diamonds}. Bartholomew jammed for about 3.1 million and Gardner carefully pondered his decision.

Gardner engaged in some slight table talk with Bartholomew and asked him some questions. Bartholomew answered at times but soon was silent while Gardner intensely stared him down. Gardner looked down, grabbed his glasses, and put them on as he continued to stare directly at Bartholomew while Bartholomew looked to be doing his best impersonation of a statue.

After several minutes, Gardner tossed in a single chip to signify a call.

"Good call", said Bartholomew as he flipped over {a-Clubs}{j-Diamonds} for ace-high.

Gardner turned over {q-Diamonds}{10-Hearts} for a pair of queens as Bartholomew got up from his seat and the dealer sent the massive pot to Gardner.

Huynh Stays Alive with Rivered Broadway Over Turned Set

Level 29 : 75,000/125,000, 125,000 ante

According to Ken Huynh, the preflop action saw Jason Bartholomew raise to 300,000 on the button and Huynh jammed for about 2.3 million in the big blind. Bartholomew called and hands were flipped over.

Ken Huynh: {a-}{j-}
Jason Bartholomew: {5-}{5-}

The flop came {q-}{10-}{2-} and the turn was the {5-} to give Bartholomew a set. Huynh said he thought he was dead until the miracle {k-} spiked the river to give Huynh Broadway and keep him alive.
