Play has drawn to a close on Day 2 of Event #20: $1,500 Badugi at the 2023 WSOP at the Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas. Out of an original field of 516, a total of 183 returned for the second day to play ten 60-minute levels. Once the dust settled, just 13 players remained to battle it out on Day 3.

Of those 13 players, it is Serhii Popovych who leads the way after a late night surge saw him bag an impressive 1,885,000. Not too far behind him is two-time bracelet winner and renowned sports bettor David "ODB" Baker with 1,400,000. Lee Horton rounds out the top three with 1,220,000.

Daniel Strelitz Eliminated in 14th Place ($6,923)

Level 25 : Blinds 15,000/25,000, 0 ante
Daniel Streilitz
Daniel Streilitz

Serhii Popovych opened from under the gun and then called after Daniel Strelitz three-bet out of the big blind.

Both players took one card on the first draw with Strelitz betting and getting called.

The second draw saw Strelitz and Popovych both take one card again. Strelitz then bet and called off for his tournament life after Popovych raised.

Strelitz took one more card while Popovych stood pat, tabling 8?7?3?2?, ahead of Strelitz's 7?3?2?. "It's a spade" remarked Strelitz as he peeled the fourth card. Though the right suit, the Q? was not sufficient to secure the pot, sending Strelitz to the payout desk in 14th place.

Serhii Popovych opened from under the gun and was called by David Bach in the big blind.

On the first draw, Bach took one card while Popovych drew two. Bach then checked and called when Popovych bet.

The second draw saw both players take one card with Bach moving his last few chips into the middle and getting called.

Before Bach and Popovych took one more card each, they turned over their three card hands. Bach held 5?3?A? while Popovych had 5?4?3?, meaning that Bach was well in the lead. Unfortunately for the at risk player, Popovych made badugi after flipping over the 7? while the J? for Bach sealed his fate.

David Baker's Double Bust Out

David -ODB- Baker

David "ODB" Baker had Christopher Kostoulas and Joel Tushnet all in on the same hand.

After patting throughout, Kostoulas sensed he was behind and drew three on the final pull. Amazingly, he found a badugi with 10?6?4?A? but couldn't beat Tushnet's 9?3?2?A?.

Unfortunately for Tushnet, ODB flipped over the perfect 4?3?2?A? to knock both players out.

Brian Hastings Bubbles Event #20: $1,500 Badugi

Level 18 : Blinds 3,000/5,000, 0 ante
Brian Hastings
Brian Hastings

William Toh opened from middle position and was called by Marcel Vonk on the button. Brian Hastings then tossed his last couple chips into the middle in the big blind to put himself at risk.

Hasting took two on the first draw while Toh drew one and Vonk stood pat. The two active players in the hand then checked to the second draw.

The second draw saw Hastings and Toh take one with Vonk again standing pat. Toh and Vonk then checked to send action to the final draw.

Hasting drew one final card on the last draw with Toh following suit. Unsurprisingly, Vonk declined to draw. Both Toh and Vonk checked to showdown with all three players keeping their hands facedown as the floor confirmed hands at all other tables were complete. Once the tournament director gave the go ahead, Hastings turned over 4?4?3?A?, which was good enough to beat Toh's 9?8?2?A? but not the Q?10?7?4? of Vonk, ensuring that Hastings will be the last player not to get paid in the tournament.

Level 16 : Blinds 1,500/3,000, 0 ante
Kevin Gerhart
Kevin Gerhart

There was a flurry of betting action before the first draw, which ended with Nate Silver and Kevin Gerhart heads up and a big pot brewing.

Both players stood pat. Silver checked, Gerhart bet, Silver called again. This time Silver decided to draw one. Gerhart patted and bet. Silver called once more.

The same action repeated on the third draw but after Gerhart bet this time, Silver folded.

"Do you wanna see it?", Gerhart enquired. Silver replied in the affirmative and Gerhart tabled J?5?4?2?.

The hand left Silver on fumes and he busted shortly afterwards.
